Help with 3 Markings on Serving Platter

Postby cbrand » Mon Sep 05, 2011 5:07 pm

I just took possession of many of my grandmothers antiques and have had success researching marks except for this covered serving dish. There is a footed stand, a tray, and a cover. The lion mark is on the side of platter's cover and the trio of markings are on the bottom of the tray. Any help would be greatly appreciated in identifying this item's origin.

Welcome to the forum.

The lion mark would be the owners crest.

Have not been able to identify the other set of marks.

Hi,

I see a sort-alike mark as on my chamberstick
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=25269 That could be Venice.
And I see a mark that looks like Rome (the two keys)
The combination of the two marks makes me suspicious.

Hi ,

Are we looking at a silver plated serving platter, with unknown plate marks? Or is the silver platter made out of a silver alloy and are we looking at unattributed pseudo marks on perhaps Hanau style silver? The crossed keys could be a pseudo mark for the Dutch city of Leyden.

Hi,

The crossed keys could indeed be a pseudo mark for Leiden, but it could also be a pseudomark for Lulea (Sweden), Neuveville (Switserland) and about 7 German city's. The combination of the key's mark and the lions head makes it, in my opinion, a set of pseudomarks in all cases if it is solid silver.

Thanks for the input everyone. I do not know the composition of this piece. I'm not well versed in this stuff and most of what I have received is smaller sterling silver pieces, not larger heavier serving pieces like this. Here is a picture of the entire piece.

I am guessing there is minimal value here, but I wanted to get as much info as I could about this piece, so I knew how much to let it go for, as this is not something my wife and I have much interest in keeping around.

Hi,

Are there more marks on more parts? If that is not the case, for me this serving platter looks plated.

Nope, just the 3 marks on the bottom of the tray piece. Nothing on the stand or cover. Thanks.

Hi-
That is the mark of the Victor Obler Co of NY. I have an undated catalog entitled Authentic Reproductions of Old Sheffield Plate and Antique Silver on Copper. I do not see the warmer in the catalog but their trademark is printed on the title page:Image

Hello Mary,

Thanks for sharing, most likely another row of unknown silver plate marks solved.

Oel
