J.L. Herrmann silver plate

Postby Bahner » Mon Nov 15, 2010 3:16 am

Hello, the only connection between J.L. Hermann and W. Bachmann is - to the best of my knowledge - that both companies at some time became part of the Krupp-Berndorf company, Bachmann in 1918, Hermann - sorry, no clue. At least until 1927 both Bachmann and Hermann produced plated objects under their respective names. Wenzel Bachmann (b. 1817 - d. 1877) founded his company in 1842. Since 1853 the company was in Vienna (Mollardgasse 30). In 1906-07 it produced plated tableware for the legendary Viennese cabaret “Fledermaus” after a design by Josef Hoffmann of the “Wiener Werkstättten”. Otherwise there are no known designers connected with the name Bachmann. A look at two surviving trade catalogues shows that Bachmann produced quite a wide range of tableware, which was not different from that of other makers of his time. Best wishes, Bahner

The set is a so called »Hotel Silver« - not part of the » art novous movement «

Hello »hrabru«

Sorry, I don’t understand why you mix furthermore in yours text a »Bachmann« item to be from »Hermann«.

As »Bahner« has already mentioned, both became part of the holding »Berndorfer Metallwarenfabrik Artur Krupp AG«. »J.L. Hermann AG« with his headquarter and factory in Vienna, and his branches in Budapest and Prague short time before the First World War; and »W. Bachmann & Co.« in Vienna short time after that war. These both remained some years be active as they were active before becoming part of the holding.

The »BACHMANN WIEN« mark is shown with the eagle mark of being court supplier — that signification is, that it is marked until about 1918.

I tend to say, that it is a Tea setbut not for sure; because there were many variations possible.

Yours set is made for public use in Hotels, Restaurants … That set hasn’t a specific »Art Nouveau« or »Secession« appearanceit’s designed conform the techno-hygienic specifications this market of appliance has. Between the competitors in this kind of market were only few differentiations in the appearance — like e.g. handles, knobs of lids, spouts.

Kind regards silverport

Date of »making« isn’t always date of »marking« - but nothing is »marked« before it’s »made«.

Hello »hcabru«

If an item is of precious, or of non precious material, it’s always equal:

Date of »making« isn’t always date of »marking« - but nothing is »marked« before it’s »made«.

The »BACHMANN WIEN« mark is shown with the eagle mark of being court supplier — that signification is, that it is marked until about 1918. Then after there wasn't any more a »court«.

An example:

Some thing is made unfinished in the first week of a year X — then it is stored in the warehouse; because the galvanic department is full of orders to be made.

In the summer of that year X the producer was buying by a holding, to become a subsidiary of them for special market items, which weren’t before in the portfolio of that holding.

In the autumn of the year X arrive an order in the sales department for such a kind of items, which were made unfinished and stored in the warehouse.

But in the warehouse aren’t any finished items — then the unfinished items were transported to the galvanic department for to be plated.

From the Galvanic department the items were then after transported to the quality control — al were o.k. and then after being marked with the new sign of the holding.

And of course, they were delivered to the client.

But the client has from the former production e.g. some tray in store — and has liked to complete them to a set of tea. For him it doesn’t matter, that the items have different marks. All were sale before X-mass.

A couple of decennia later one of these sets was by a community of heirs being delivered to an auction. Correct described as to being marked with not equal marks of producer.

The »Purist« doesn’t then being interested any more — the »Opportunist« maybe know the history; made a bid and got it.

»Opportunist« community of heirs are underwent the same proceeding — the items are described as to being marked with not equal marks of producers.

That's collectors life.

Kind regards silverport
