It is silver plated (signified by EPNS beneath J & co) and made by Johnson & Cc Birmingham 1879-1899

»J&Co« = Johnson & Co. / »E P G S« = Electro Plated Good Silver.

Hello »testguy«

Welcome to the Forum.

The attribution to the maker is correct.

Indicated is »E P G S« - that signification is: »Electro Plated Good Silver«.

Well it could be, that for the production of this epergne »Nickel Silver« was used; but that isn't indicated here. Not only in that period was it very often usual, to use also other metal alloys as basic material.

Reason there fore were different: e.g. cost reason for the basic material itself, but also for the toys. E.g. brass was cheaper as Nickel Silver — and a toy could be used for maybe 2,000 items made in brass, but only for 1,000 made in Nickel Silver.

The »2912« numerals could be also in this case the model number of yours epergne.

To place the model number on the item was/is very helpful for the producer, wholesalers and retailers stock and sale — but later also for replacements …

That statement on »E P G S« signification, I make out of my memory — the explanation of signification I've seen in documentation on "British Plated", two decennia ago. But my archive on that, is actually far away of me — for that reason I couldn't sound it by indication of my source; sorry.

Kind regards silverport

Hello,

E.P.G.S. is Electro Plated German Silver. This is not actually silver, but one of the many names given to an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, a popular base metal alloy for electro- plate silver.

Paul.
