Reed & Barton Embassy piece-help dating

Postby sagreene » Wed Nov 16, 2005 9:19 pm

I am looking at possibly purchasing a covered butter dish locally but want to verify my info. first. The piece is marked on the inside of the lid with the Reed & Barton name (not the symbols shown on the Reed & Barton marks page on this site), the pattern number 1142, and a symbol that looks like a tilted C around a capital A. According to the marks page, the C/A mark indicates a date of 1945. However, my research had a "hit" at Replacements, which had this very piece, same pattern number, but dated 1988. Which to believe?

I wish I could supply an image, but my digital doesn't do high-res close-ups well at all. I am hesitant to purchase the piece since it is currently priced well above the current value being asked at Replacements if it actually is from 1955.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Patterns were/are kept in production for many decades, not just by R & B, but most manufacturers. As far as I have seen, 1945 versus 1988 would not make a whit of difference; they're both just modern production pieces.

True, but then again it may matter depending on the context in which you are collecting, so that doesn't really answer my question. I certainly don't want anything that was made after I was born, but I was particularly attracted to this piece not only stylistically, but also for the suggested date of 1945 since the WWII era and years immediately following is a decade of particular interest.
