Need help identifying spoons

Postby smk325 » Sun Dec 30, 2007 1:38 am

I inherited these spoons from my great aunt and cannot make out any identifying marks

They have what looks to be a butterfly on the top and are beautifully etched on the back
the box has the initials KB and what looks to be WV joined together and the words "NY Silver"

I have attached photos

(admin photo edit - images too large - link only - see Posting Requirements )

I hope someone can help (and I hope I linked the pictures correctly!)

Nysilver is swedish for new silver.
At the box I see the name Astrid - also a possible name in sweden or the nordic countries. I cannot read the first name.

No marks at the spoons?

http://stamps.swedac.se/index_ns.asp?sLang=en
at that page a search at KB give:

Sponsor´s mark Name Delivery address Postal address Phone Reg Unreg

KB BOURDETTES SILVERVERKSTAD K 291 00 KRISTIANSTAD
1921-1950

that time period is corresponding with the spoons and the box.

When Hose_dk says 'Nysilver' means 'new silver', I would suggest that means 'not silver', as in nickel silver or alpacca.

Correct I translated the 2 words. New=ny and silver=silver

The swedish product for "nysilver" is not plated, the base material is white like silver but it has nothing to do with silver.
Every swedish silver item has to contain 4 marks: maker, katfott, S and town. As these marks are not present we know that it is not silver.

I am sure that it must be swedish, because the word "silver" is swedish.

by the way in Denmark the same word is "sølv" and we call it pletsølv. But that is another story.
