CGS Spoon (Crescent and Star)

Postby SilverSurfer » Mon Aug 13, 2007 5:42 pm

Here are the maker's marks on a 21.8 cm long, 39 gram weight serving spoon in Old English Pattern:

The crescent moon and star lead me to think Brit Colonial Calcutta as the source of this spoon, but I don't have the excellent text by Wynyard Wilkinson detailing the Colonial Indian Silversmiths' marks. Might someone be able to help me out with this item? TIA!

Your spoon is German, the crescent and star being for the city of Schleswig, and the maker "CGS" being Carl Gottlieb Sager (1787-1849). He was the son of goldsmith Georg Heinrich Sager, also of Schleswig, and married (in 1816) Dulcine Henriette Helms, the daughter of of a goldsmith.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, Blakstone, for your information. Caught me looking on that one!
