GLASGOW FORK-MARKS AND MAKER?

NEED HELP WITH THESE MARKS ON FORK.
MARKER P.A-in plain oblong box
4 MARKS; HEAD OF VICORIA/GLAS MARK/LION ON HIND LEGS/LARGE 'S'
LAST 3 IN BOX WITH FLAT TOP AND SIDES . BOTTOM { is this shape.

I am assuming that when you say "Glas mark" you are referring to the Glasgow town mark. That makes sense with the rest of the marks. The "Victoria head" will date it between 1841 and 1889. The trouble is that there are two"S" date letters in that period, being 1863 and 1889. 1863 is a Gothic font, and given you didn't say that the "S" is Gothic, I woul suspect 1889 is correct.

As for a maker - well, Peter Aitken was a maker with the correct mark, but he worked in the early 19th century. No other likely suspects have their marks recorded; perhaps his son, Peter Aitken Junior (earliest mark recorded in 1845, no image of the mark available)?

P.A is most definately Peter Arthur (since 1808) if your S is plain Times (with serif) I would be lead to believe 1837-38. Nowhere in my new book copywrited in 1937, does it list any PA or P.A after 1848. If it's a serif S then research Peter Arthur; Gothic 1863-64, and plain serif 1889-90 as Waylander said. Hopr you find your true answer, I had fun looking it up in my book. Christina

Are you using the Pocket Jacksons? While it is true that Vic became Queen in 1837, her Duty mark was not used on Glasgow pieces until 1841. See Jacksons Pocket page 132, Jacksons 3rd Edition page 571. Hence my determination.

The Book of Old Silver Seymour B. Wyler Crown Publishers 1937; I am no pro, so any correction on my part is appreciated. I am confused as to whether her 'head' is facing right or left, and the standards... king to right, queen to left??? correct me if I am wrong. I was only thinking that the initials should have official confirmation, and with out a viewable picture how can we tell the style of the S. It is funny to see how many questions there are here, and how people don't realize how important this is. As for my scent bottle, posted earlier; I saw one on an Antique Site that said Charles Mappin, but I have yet to get confirmation of this mark; I will try to get a photo on for you to see, and maybe you can help me with this, as there was no response to my posting at all; I suppose everyone thought I had my answer, but the date letters don't seem to match up, as well it says CM as a London maker "name not traced". Wyler is useful, but is full of errors. The rule is that kings face right and queens (queen I guess as only one was Vic) fac left. Often with well polished marks it si difficult to tell which way they are facing.
