Fish Slice

Postby dimi66 » Sat May 27, 2017 1:21 pm

Hello,

Can anybody help to identify the marks "PH" and "10"? I am roaming around Bergen, Tønder, and -less probable - Ulm.
Thanks in advance.

Thank you both,
Moonshine and Theoderich,

for your hints on where the slice could come from. I am sorry to say that I couldn't get any further. In case of a provenance from Thuringia or Saxony the informations on silversmiths in this area for me are hard to find. A Brazilian provenance was a surprising possibility from which I learnt that in this case the "10" meant ten dinheiros (10/12), that's 833/1000, in contrast to ten loth (10/16), that's 625/1000. But the missing crown mark and no "PH" find stopped deeper insight.
In the Rabinovitch book on silver servers I saw that the slice design was popular in Germany and Danmark (what doesn' exclude additional provenances) from 1770 to 1790. Good guesstimate Theoderich!

So thanks again

Yours

Dimi

Hi Dimi

Can you determine the fineness? Make the test, whether it is 10/12 or 10/16.

Hi,
Jewelers have electronic testers. It takes a couple of minutes. Acid test is not reliable here.
10 Loth = 625/1,000
10 dinero/dinheiro = 833.3/1,000.
