Knife Fork Spoon Swiss ?

Postby silverfan » Tue May 03, 2016 7:05 am

Hi all,
I found these flatware pieces in the Augsburger Faden pattern in a box from "Bijouterie-Handluing C. Holzhalb, Sohn, auf dem Münsterhof No. 113 in Zürich" so that I suppose they are swiss. Who is the maker?

could it be that the maker's mark CHs means C. Holzhalb Sohn? In the internet I did not find anything matching under this name.

Hi Silverfan
CHs is attributed to Carl Johann Caspar Hegi, (1807-1861), Master 1832, until 1836 in Zürich, then in Appenzell. Can you send a Close up of the marks on the left and the right?
Regards, Jörg

Caspar II. Holzhalb (1798-1847) was master in Zürich 1819. His mark is a CH without "s".

If the mark on the right is a "H", it would be the City mark of Herisau in Appenzell. Stecci allocates Hegi to Herisau in his "Goldschmiede von Herisau".
Can we have a picture of the spoon and PLEASE a picture of the box? I am fond of Biedermeier flatware boxes

Yes, the mark on the right is a H, for the mark on the left I couldn't take a better photo. Is this a kind of year letter? I
am not sure if the box is the original one. The blade of the knife is also marked CHs.

Hi Joerg,
thanks for the identification of my swiss flatware; so I can date the pieces between 1836 and 1861!?

Hi Silverfan
Yes, 1836-1861 is correct. Maybe we can narrow down considering the box. There is no proof, but the box looks like it is the original one for this set. The box has a retailer tag from Capar II Holzhalb, active latest until 1847. So you can assume between 1836 and 1847. Anyway, a very nice set.

Hi Joerg,
again thanks for your answer. Is the mark on the left an assaymark?
