Fantasy marks or not

Postby oel » Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:34 am

Hi,

Image
A friend of mine asked me about information of the shown marks. The marks are present on a silver bowl, bought in Venice Italy. Unfortunately we only have this one image. I do not believe those marks to be Hanau and/or style. Are those just fantasy marks? Thanks.

Best,

Oel.

I purchased a fork with travancore silver coins applied on it, and here are the coins of the Travancore Kingdom:

Another culture similar to Travancore symbols is the Parthian Civilization and Empire, which has symbols similar to the Travancore although the Parthian Dynasty was around 1000 AD and the Travancore Kingdom was around 1880 AD.

I've never seen a Travancore or Parthian bowl with these hallmarks, but at least this might be a place to start.

Far right mark definitively looks like the lion of the Repubblica di Venezia (Republic of Venice) and represents a winged lion's head holding a Gospel. It’s often distorted and there are many variations often difficult to decipher. But one can never be sure with Italian marks – silver may be 18th century or made the day before yesterday.

Assuming that the mark indicated by AG 2012 can recall the "leone in moleca" of San Marco, the other marks do not remotely resemble those in use in Venice.
Also Venetian silverware with 5 marks has never been found so far.
This would be a fake that would not fool anyone.
It seems more likely to be fantasy marks, provided it is silver.
