Help With Mark Please

Postby welshhelen » Wed Mar 04, 2015 6:40 pm

I have a large presentational tankard, sterling silver, a fabulous piece marked with Swedish three crown mark and S in hexagon, indicating it was a Swedish import. Does any know the other marks?

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

You are far more likely to get a response if you embed your images, as few people will click on links.

Good day Theo,

Just looking at the top mark, it does appear to be the crowned SR of Simon Rosenau in Bad Kissingen laying on it's side. The others remind me of two by the Hanau firm of J.D. Schieissner & Sohne. Rosenau and Schieissner had a strong working relationship isn't that correct?

Now I'm confused, where did this image come from? I'm referring to the second link above.

Hi,

Right on Warren, clearly Simon Rosenau.

Thank you all for the input.

I'm being told that this is an 18th Century Swedish Sterling piece which predates the institution of Swedish silver dating system, which was begun in 1759. I believe they are claiming that because of another mark which I believe is a Swedish Import mark for .830 silver which wasn't used until 1912. I can post better pictures of the Swedish mark later.

The Simon Rosenau mark seems very clear, which means it can't be 18th Century Swedish Sterling.

The three crown mark in an oval is the Swedish import mark implemented 1.1.1913. The S in the hexagon is as well the Swedish mark for silver implemented the mentioned date. None of the two marks has anything to do with the objects origin or date. The marks only guarantee the minimum legal Swedish silver fineness of 830/1000.

The ``chalice mark`` with two dots on each side. (s449).
Crowned SR has already been discussed.
