The difference between TB and T.B

Postby Granmaa » Sun Jun 04, 2006 9:48 am

I have always thought that TB was the maker's mark for Thomas Barker who made many spoons in the early 19th century. However, I often see the maker's mark T.B; these are usually on slightly later spoons: c.1820.
Is T.B just the later mark of Thomas Barker, or is it a different maker?

There are a number of makers with a T.B mark that fall within the period of time you are talking about. The particular mark you showed fits with the mark of Thomas Balliston, whose mark was first entered in 1812. There is also Thomas Ballam, whose mark was registered in 1820.
