Germany: Wilkens, 800 + "h"

Postby orthogonal » Sun Aug 24, 2014 3:54 pm

Today I noticed an "h" on a modern tea spoon. Is it the maker's mark, or an indication of the year, or is it for "heavy" like on american silver, or something else?

Thank you for your help! Thomas

Hello, that is not a German mark. Looks like an import mark of some kind. Best wishes, Bahner

Appears to be an Austrian import mark.

Dear Bahner, it's likely to be some kind of import mark - yes, but I still couldn't decipher it.

Dear Trev, thank you for your reply! That hallmark does not look like any Austrian import mark I know. Nevertheless - I found that spoon in Austria, so it could be right.

Hi, Bahner and Trev are right. Austria import hall mark used 1925-2001; wing, number 4 to indicate 800 fineness (80% pure silver), the ?; for the regional assay office letter, for example W for Vienna.

Oel, thank you so much! I know that hallmark, but I was too focused on the "h" to recognise it.

This forum is great! You do a fantastic job in educating beginners like me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
