Why are there two Danish craftsmen marks on these forks?

Postby Elena Russ » Wed Jan 19, 2011 9:39 am

Hello, dear Sirs.

Could you please tell me why there are two Danish craftsmen marks on these forks?
I was meeting the items of same design with the mark Joh. H.P. and they bore the mark Eneret (exclusive, engl.) too. May be in my situation Joh. H.P. (Joh. H. Paulsen) is author of design, and PF (P. C. L. Frigast Sølvvarefabrik) is manufacture?
Thank you.

Hi Elena!

The items may have been produced by PF on licence for Joh. H. P. = Johannes Henning Paulsen. Joh. H. Paulsen was a goldsmith, but he did silver cutlery too. As he was not a member of the association of Danish silversmiths, he couldn't copy the patterns in the great pattern book of that association, but in stead he created his own patterns. He usually, it seems, used a lot of silver for his cutlery, which makes then durable even when expised to daily use for ages.

A set of salade servers and a cake serving spoon in this partucular pattern was on auction some where this year. And I have seen one or two salt spoons in the same pattern.
