makers mark on tongs B C above & N?

Postby nigel le sueur » Sat Dec 24, 2005 8:32 am

l have a pair of English sugar tongs where the makers mark is one l cannot find, the tongs only have a "lion passant and a george duty mark (cameo) which leads me to think they are late 18th cent, but they are not "bright cut" and are from the "fiddle pattern* the mark is B C above & N. (could poss be a G and not C as right hand side of hallmark is worn)

l have tried a lot of reference books,l could be wrong but it appears to me that northen silversmiths seem to have more partnerships.

l do have a photo, sorry but not computer literate enough.

Nigel

Personally, when I see there is no town mark on a piece that it otherwise fully marked, I think "London". I do note that the date letter is not present, however. HAving said that, I have never heard of your particular maker - the "&N" on the bottom is quite distinctive - so perhaps some one with Grimwade’s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 may be able to assist further.
