London 1743 maker's mark

Postby jascott » Mon Dec 19, 2005 6:53 pm

What a wonderful site....I have learned so much. Feel very frustrated not having a camera to enable me to post pictures, but here is my query:

Have inherited a silver salver with very clear markings. Using the site I have established London, silver, with a date of 1743, with a maker's mark of IR and below a larger I*R.

Any ideas?
TIA for your help.

What style is the lettering? If cursive, and if the star between the second "IR" is well above the letters, one possibility is John Robinson II. The date fits! But only a photo will allow 100% certainty!
