»BUTZON NFLGR.« = owner from 1879 on, Anton Franz Hubert Bahner.
Hello
Reiner The predecessor manufactory, owned by
Hermann Joseph Butzon (b. ca.
1829, d.
1912) from
Kaiserswerth,
then a little town in the North of Düsseldorf, founded in
1867, was the »
Silber-Waaren-Fabrik und Präge-Anstalt« (factory for silverwares and embossed items) in
Düsseldorf’s Bahnstrasse 39. For his
maker’s mark he chose a »
knights helmet, in face, with two feathers«.
When he retired in
1879,
his manufactory,
in Düsseldorf’s Bahnstrasse 39,
was taken over by his friend Anton Franz Hubert Bahner —
and the sons of A.F.H. Bahner assisted her father. Anton Franz Hubert Bahner, b. ca.
1818 in Kaiserswerth, son of the Kaiserswerth gold- and silversmith
Peter Anton Bahner (b.
1782, d. before
1861),
from his second marriage.
1846 A.F.H. Bahner restored the
St. Suitbertus shrine of Kaiserswerth.
A.F.H. Bahner married 22 Oct. 1851 Anna Regina Tourné, witness was
H. J. Butzon. In
1861, when he took over his father’s workshop in Kaiserswerth, he is documented to be a »
Goldarbeiter« (goldsmith). His sons are:
Anton jr., Louis, Peter and Wilhelm.
In
1887, when
Anton Franz Hubert Bahner retired, the »
BUTZON NFLGR.« was Anton Bahner junior, and Franz Bahner. That’s the time span of yours flatware (signed around or after 1 January 1888) and their place of birth: Bahnstrasse 39, Düsseldorf.
In the same year
1887, so it’s reported, have
Anton Bahner junior, and his brother
Wilhelm Bahner founded in Düsseldorf capital the »
Silberwarenfabrik Gebrüder Bahner« (Silverwares factory Bahner Bros.). As their maker’s mark they used the »
knight’s helmet« mark of
H.J. Butzon too —
as well a shield mark with only a pellet in his centre.
In
1901 the company’s name was changed in »
Vereinigte Silberwarenfabriken AG« (United Silverwares Factories Inc.) - maker’s mark remained the »
knight’s helmet«; latter the shield mark was ceased. United from »
BUTZON NFLGR.« and »
Silberwarenfabrik Gebrüder Bahner«.
Plated wares of them were
marked as: »
V.S.F.« or »
VSF«.
The »
Vereinigte Silberwarenfabriken AG« has ceased before
1967;
but their factory buildings still exist: Auf’m Hennekamp 25, Düsseldorf, Province North Rhine Westphalia, Germany.
Franz Bahner has founded his own silverwares factory in Düsseldorf capital as »
Franz Bahner oHG Silberwarenfabrik« - his
maker’s mark was a »
lions head in profile«
looking left side. The factory was in
1919 taken over by the
Montan Trust »
Mansfeld« - then the
maker’s mark was changed to »
crossed hammer«, with
M S. The »
Franz Bahner AG« has ceased also last century in the sixties-seventies;
but also their factory buildings still exist: Vollmerswerther Strasse 80-86, Düsseldorf, Province North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. Look here:
viewtopic.php?t=20142 Louis Bahner founded his own silverwares factory in
Berlin, Germany’s capital — his
maker’s mark was
a half above the horizon rosen star, with corona between the 5 points (of an eight pointed star). Kind regards silverport
