Carl Deffner, Esslingen, Germany.
He also produced pewter wares, check here:

I think the lot system of identifying silver fineness was finished by 1900.
So, I would guess silverplate.

This is the maker’s mark of Carl Deffner, Esslingen am Neckar, Germany.

Carl Christian Ulrich Deffner (b. 4 Aug. 1789, d. 26 Oct. 1846), a young sales man took over 1815 a lacquers ware workshop of Rudy; and by his engagement, he build up a factory for metal ware, e.g. also be made in »Sheffield Plate«.



After his death, his two sons Carl and Wilhelm were two of the »driving axles« in Esslingen; well, there were more of course. Wilhelm installed in about 1860 [maybe earlier; date isn’t verified] in their factory their first Galvanic workshop.

The Carl Deffner factory never made items from silver alloy!

So the in your photo shown numeral »12« isn’t a sign for: Made from »12 Lot« silver alloy.

It’s a pity that you don’t show the marked item itself — it’s a »sugar box«? Please add a photo.

Their quality is of a very high standard level — apprentices of Deffner got every where a professional job. And almost metal ware factories in XIX century Württemberg Kingdom were founded by former Deffner employee.

Thank you for the added photos!

It seems that the wine jug body and the mount of the tap itself is cast brass; then after be plated.

In his stylistic is the wine jug from the »Art Nouveau« period — by »Deffner« from about 1900 on until 1914. In that time period were also other items made in other stylistic appearances.
