Poinçonné d'une fleur de lys

Postby oel » Wed Feb 17, 2010 11:05 am

Hi

Could one of the French experts please tell me more about the hallmark on the right side of the picture? Could it be, as claimed by an Auction house, a genuine ‘Poinçonné d'une fleur de lys’used 1717-1722. If so why is this in combination with the ‘crabmark’ on the left. Or is the 'fleur de lys' mark actually a French maker's mark in a lozenge?

Unfortunately I am not in the position to show a picture of the complete item. I thank you and look forward to receiving your reply.

Hmmm... I share your skepticism. The maker's mark in a lozenge shaped reserve and crab mark say post-1838 to me. The even, parallel striations on the piece indicate a machine-made rather than an 18thC hand-raised object. A fleur-de-lys discharge mark for Paris 1717-1722 would be in an irregular-shaped reserve and you'd expect also to find a charge mark, a date letter and a maker's mark.
