unknown tree-mark on a spoon

Postby R ingo » Wed Oct 21, 2009 6:46 am

Hello,
can someone help me with this tree-mark? Is it a city mark? Where the spoon was made?

Kind regards,
Ringo

Could it be Mainburg in Bavaria?

I have now a spoon in typical noth-german (Hamburg) or danmark - style.
there is also a Makersmark [Grard] and a townmark looks a little similar to Marienwerder
and an other mark [1&8 ?]

I'm not sure that these two are the same maker, but the first of these spoons may be from Lindau; see the Lindau Arms.

Also: there is a Theodor Grard, goldarbeiter (goldworker) listed in a Lindau directory of 1855.

Just a thought.

Hello blakstone and Theoderich,

thank you for your help.
The name Grard is very seldom. I only know 2 goldsmiths with this name. Both have learnd in Stade, Lower Saxony.
The first is Hippolit Joseph Grard, born in Stade, learnd there 1827-1833 from E.W. Brand. Later he worked from 1841-1845 in Altona (Stierling p. 80, Scheffler, Niedersachsen p. 1093).
The other one is Carl Theodor Grard (Scheffler p. 1095, Stierling p. 80). He learnd 1838-44 in Stade from E.J.F Schneider. Where he later works is unknown.
Probably Carl Theodor Grard from Stade is the same Theodor Grard who later works in Lindau and is the owner of the "C.T.Grard."-mark. But what shows the marks on Theoderichs spoon (with northern Germany style)?

Kind regards,
Ringo

I thank You blakstone for this interesting Information. Probably stacci will know more about Theodor Grard.
The presumption of ringo's very interesting. I have never seen the townmark of Lindau in the 19. Century.

Yes it ist Karl Theodor Grard - this can not be a coincidence.
