"CRAB" Hallmark ~ HELP!!!!

Postby Vietnam1967 » Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:34 pm

I recently purchased a pocket watch, which I believe is Silver. On the hinged lids is an impression of a crab. It looks like a "Blue Crab.", for indentification purposes. The mark is impressed into the silver. If anyone can help me identifying this mark, it would be deeply appreciated.

I'm afraid I don't know a blue crab from any other - however a crab was/is a French touch mark from the provinces. A photo would certainly prove this possibility!

My camera doesn't pick the image up so I have made a drawing, as close to the image as possible. Along with the "CRAB" there are the number 3941 and a diamond with the letters J R. Thanks for your response.

Check this web site

I found this site that has some info about the French Crab.
http://www.wineantique.com/DEFINITIONS/ ... french.htm

If I read it correctly, the crab means 80% french silver.

There is a far more complete chart of French marks on this site ->
French Hallmarks
A crab mark does not mean it is French silver, unless the mark matches identically.
