Help with mark on danish silver

Postby kalo93406 » Mon Apr 14, 2008 4:31 pm

Hi.. I have this small box maybe 3.5 x 5 inches. Is the mark I'm seeing an Assay mark? or makers mark? Any ideas who it is? Date code looks like 59? or?? thanks very much

Welcome to the forum.
Year look like 1952 to me. The 3 towers are danisk control mark - but the item is not nesseserily danish.
The other mark is makers mark - sorry but I dont know who.

I see no guardein mark - 1952 should be a JS. See here http://www.925-1000.com/dm_Assay.html

but guardein mark was not a must. So maker was free to skip that one.

Thank you for replying.. I should check the piece again for other marks. Can't remember if the photo is from the top or bottom. Maybe there are more marks on the other part. I see your point about the assay mark. The page you referred indicates it should be there together with the year mark. R:)

But only indicate. From 1608 guardein was a must. And the 3 towers for Copenhagen.
But around 150 years ago the number of silver marks was reduced. Then the 3 towers could be used all over Denmark and the (city) guardein became state (or country) guardein. Then guardein mark became not nessaserry. The 3 towers became not nessaserry.
And finely the 3 towers was taken out of use after almost 400 years of practice of making a new mark every year.
Today the 3 towers does not excist.

And actually this year 2008 it is 400 years since it was used for the first time - and I dont think that anybody cares.
