Hello, it does not look like an original German mark. I rather believe that halfmoon and crown were added later when the piece was sold in Germany. As to the origin of it - no clue, sorry. Best wishes, Bahner

Are you saying that these are import marks? Aren't import marks different?
Also, crescent and the moon represents silver of at least 800 quality, can it be of higher quality as well?

Hello, there are no import marks in Germany. I am not even sure if this is really silver, I cannot recognize numbers for the fineness. Best wishes. Bahner

ok, this is scary. :) I thought that the crescent and the moon marks were only put on silver pieces.

The maker's mark is on its side; it should be rotated 90° counter-clockwise. According to my copy of Diebeners 1925 Goldschmiede Jahrbuch, it's the mark of Emil Freund, a metal- & silverware manufacturer in Hanau, Germany. Thiele's Tafel- und Schausilber des Historismus aus Hanau notes that they specialized in Judaica and that the firm was dissolved in 1929.
