Riga mark

Postby admin » Mon Jan 07, 2008 11:43 am

Hi,
Saw this on a late 19th cent. teaset this weekend. Town mark is, I believe, for Riga, Latvia. What I assumed was the maker's mark appears, when louped, to be a number 14. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks, Tom

I don't think it is a makers mark. I can mention that in the area the 14 Lod was used in the beginning of the 19th century so maybe it was marked earlier with this mark or it was marked in additon to the 84 mark which is equal finess.

Hi kerppola,
The set definitely dates to the late 19th C., however, your suggestion makes perfect sense. I am not sure when in the 19th century the 84 zolotniki mark became compulsory in Riga, but no doubt the continued use of the 14 mark would have made the local consumers more comfortable.
Regards, Tom
