Identification Assistance - Jas Annin Mark

Post by operapsm »

Have three Coin Silver spoons marked with an Arm & Hammer, 'R', Eagle, and "Jas.Annin."

Any help identifying this silversmith would be appreciated!

James Annin and his son Herbert were jewelers in Le Roy NY.

Little information available, but James was born in 1829, so was probably working by 1850 or so. His son was born in 1862 and both are listed in the 1880 census as jewelers.

The Annin mark is a retailer's mark-they are shown in a directory as having been in business in LeRoy, NY from 1859-1867. The other marks are pseudo hallmarks from the maker, and the mark has been attributed to James Steele, a silversmith from Rochester, NY, who was working from c. 1840-1878.

The Steele attribution is at best a guess. There is no actual evidence that the marks are attributable to him or anyone else. McKay's book is a valiant effort, but woefully short of verifiable facts or sources.

James Annin is listed as a twenty-two year old watchmaker in Boston, Massachusetts in 1850. After that time he is found in Le Roy, New York and is listed there in 1900 as a working jeweler, age seventy-one.
