A.F.Shepard - maker or retailer?

Postby sspencer » Sat Oct 07, 2006 11:34 pm

I found a very plain, elongated fiddle shape, large spoon that is marked only A.F.Shepard. There is a very finely engraved (almost looks scratch engraved) monogram on the front of the spoon handle. The style of spoon and monogram initials look mid-19th century. My guess is that the spoon is coin silver, but I haven't had it tested yet. I have been unable to find anything about A.F.Shepard in my silver books, as either a maker or retailer, nor have I found anything on the internet sites I've checked. That makes me think it is probably a retailer rather than a maker. Does anyone have any information or ideas about this mark?

I don't know how he marked his pieces, but there was a Alpheus Xavier Francis Shepard, Georgetown, Kentucky, who worked c.1815-1831.
