American Silver Mark "Z + B"

Postby LKC » Sat Sep 23, 2006 5:30 pm

Looking for information on an American coin silver mark "Z + B" in a rectangular mark. Stamped on a late 18th Cent helmet-form creamer with a stylized handle. Anyone know of this mark?

I believe that's a mark used by Zachariah Brigden, Boston, Massachusetts (1734-1787).

Thanks for the information... Any idea as to when in his career that he used the Z + B mark as opposed to the one shown on the referenced link?

Checked my books, but they don't date when the marks were used. Don't want to confuse this issue, but my books have him using at least two other variations of these marks.

Brigden used half a dozen marks in his long career. The Z+B mark (Kane mark b) was used in the 1765-1785 period -- of the 15 creamers listed in Kane, it is used 10 times (the remaining 5 are marked ZB or Z-B, marks he began using in the late 1770s.

The link provided is to my long out of date site; the link to the current build is American Silversmiths

and to his page: Brigden

I'd like to say that it's good of you Wev to put in all that time and effort and then share this information with others. Excellent site.

Thank you; it has, in the last seven years, given me a good deal of pleasure in the doing and the sharing; if you can't afford to collect, research can prove a powerful anodyne.
