No one seem to know, i have looked over the internet but could not find anything. But thanks for taking a look guys its a mystery this one lol

This is a little too late for me, but if no one else is going to take it. The sovereign's head is obviously Victorian, it is also a pseudo hallmark. I may be wrong but I would be surprised it was American. I am reasonably certain it is the same mark found on Canadian silver from Toronto. I don't think it is in the Canadian books. You might try Dognose's thread on the Canadian trade. The problem is that the M (or W) might not have anything to do with the maker, it may be a pseudo date letter mark, and even if it does stand for the maker a one letter mark is hard to attribute.

I must have been tired when I wrote that. The bust is obviously Victoria, not Nefertiti, but with an eagle it would be American not Canadian. Probably New York where pseudo hallmarks are most common. In that case you might want to look for a copy of "Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver" by John R. McGrew. I never bought a copy as the subject is too late to interest me, and an attribution might be just a guess anyway, but it would be somewhere to start.

Hi,

McGrew "tentatively" attributes the mark to Montgomery & Co. and/or Morgan Morgans, successors to Albert Coles. However, I believe it is more likely a "W", as does Cheryl in http://925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35384

The problem is you didn't show us a picture of the knife, I just saw the picture of the other knife. I would agree with Cheryl, not just because it is more her field, but because a successor to Albert Coles would make it after 1880. I would think the other knife is earlier than that.
Post a picture, but remember some styles were used for quite some time.

I'm just researching the same mark for a friend that is also on a butter knife as in the previous post, this one with a beaded edge. Bright cut floral design on the otherside of the blade. Her shot was so fuzzy could not positively identify the W, but that is definitely it. Do you all agree that it is post 1880?
