This is a little too late for me, but if no one else is going to take it. The sovereign's head is obviously Victorian, it is also a pseudo hallmark. I may be wrong but I would be surprised it was American. I am reasonably certain it is the same mark found on Canadian silver from Toronto. I don't think it is in the Canadian books. You might try Dognose's thread on the Canadian trade. The problem is that the M (or W) might not have anything to do with the maker, it may be a pseudo date letter mark, and even if it does stand for the maker a one letter mark is hard to attribute.
