German Silversprings??

Postby nancstewart » Wed Mar 22, 2006 3:22 pm

I have a case (3.5 x 1.75 x .25) that looks like a cigarette case but too thin? It is marked STERLING N & H on the silver edge.

Inside is gold and under the lip and right on the gold is "GERMAN SILVERSPRINGS". It is under the edge so I cannot get a photo no matter how hard I try.

1) Does anyone have an idea what this case would be used for? It has a a hanger on one corner and part of a chain like it was part of a Chatelaine?

2) Is N & H Nussbaum & Hunold? Are they a German company?

3) What is German Silversprings?

Thanks for any help. Nancy

"German Silver Springs" means that, while the case itself is sterling, the hinge springs are not sterling, but "German Silver" a trade name for a nickel alloy. The N&H trademark is likely for Nussbaum & Hunold of Providence.

According to my version of Rainwater, the use of the N & H mark was used in or about 1920. However, from 1921 to 1925 the listing was Walter Hunold. I wonder if he changed the mark for this period. Anyway, enough information exists to help date your piece to circa 1920.
