H&S COIN D.R.BROWN&CO

Found a nice tea spoon while metal detecting here in Sacramento, CA. Have searched to no avail the hallmark on the spoon. H&S COIN D.R. BROWN&CO. Has a "M"monogram on the back tip as well. On the front tip has a nice cameo of a women bust looking to the right. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hotchkiss & Schreuder of Syracuse NY were the manufacturers; D. R. Brown, the retailer.

Thanks for the very fast response!...Great info..any help on dating the spoon..from what I can guess it must be before 1870. thanks

David Hotchkiss and Andrew Schreuder were in partnership from 1845 to 1871. Their last mark "H & S" in plain incised leters, was used from 1865 to 1871.

Pattern is "Medallion", coin silver, 1863. As a side note, they show the spoon reinvented itself in sterling in 1867.

D R Brown & Co was a business in Saginaw, Michigan that apparently consisted of Benjamin E Brown the father and sons Demetrius R Brown and Charles S Brown. The father besides being a jeweler was a dealer in real estate; Demetrius was a jeweler; and Charles functioned as a ticket agent on the business premises. The business is listed in Brown's Annual Directory of the Saginaw Valley for 1878 and was probably in existence from at least 1870 which would put the two sons in their mid twenties at the that time.
