Postby SILVERMAX » Tue Aug 07, 2007 2:43 pm

Please help ID the hallmarks below - I think they could be Dutch, but couldn't find in Dutch hallmark section...
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

The vessel looks like Vänersborg, Sweden.
The book says that the goldsmiths were under Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö Jönköping or Arboga - now whether the crowned G? stands for Gothenburg I dont know.
930 or the head I cannot figure out, but the ship is mark no 8148 in the book.

Thank you for your reply, but if the ship mark is swedish, you should see a letter and a number next to it so you will be able to date it.
I am not sure why the administration moved it to german silver!
What book are you refering to?
What year do you think it dates from?
Thank you for your expertise.

It is German, not Swedish. The mark on the left is a crowned "GR", universally attributed to the prolific Hanau, Germany firm of Georg Roth, founded in 1891. (The other two are false or "pseudo" marks.) I'd say it dates from the first quarter of the 20th century.

Hope this helps!

Silvermax you are right there should have been 4 marks and 930 is not one that you would see in sweden at that time. The book is "Svensk silversmide 1520-1850" the bible on swedish silver.
Why a similar mark is at your piece?? I dont know but blakstone has identified so.

The pseudomarks used by Hanau makers had a tendency to imitate older marks from not only Germany, but also many other countries in Europe. The practice causes us much confusion, but does make researching Hanau silver an interesting area.

I've found "930" on pseudomarked pieces from both Germany and the Netherlands, often accompanied by British import marks. Suspect that these pieces were intended for the English market.
