Silver and brass serving piece

Postby Granmaa » Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:33 am

Here is 22cm long serving piece with a silver handle and a brass bowl.
The silver is hallmarked 800 crown half moon and what looks like a D, the other side is hallmarked similarly but has been overstamped with a French import mark for 1864 to 1893.
The brass is also marked (ARD).
Could someone please tell me the maker and date.

Hello, maker is Jandorf from Frankfurt. His mark is a segment of a circle, with the curved side up and the flat side down (turn this pic 90 degree to the left). Jandorf specialised in making cheap silver cutlery with hollow handles, made from very thin silver foil. He was active ca. 1900 to the 1920ies. As to the other mark - sorry, no idea. The French importer, perhaps ? Best wishes, Bahner

Thanks Bahner; you're quite right, the handle is made from very thin silver. The other mark (ARD) is on the brass bowl, and is much better quality than the handle.
