Tankard with three hallmarks & silversmiths symbol - Han

Postby sloguy » Mon Apr 16, 2007 8:27 pm

Hello everyone,
My first time on this forum. I just read the pages on Hanau silver and believe this tankard could be a reproduction made there. It is nearly 7" tall and 4" wide. with intrecate poppy design. The front pannel shows Wilhelm Tell ( name written next to picture ) confronted by the king while his son stands with apple on his head. The second picture is of the three marks stamped on the bottom. Inside the handle is chased 1571 and what looks like a beet or carrot. This mark is not stamped. It is chased like the design on the tankard. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You are correct; these are pseudo-hallmarks used by J. D. Schleissner Söhne of Hanau.

Thank you very much Blakstone! This has been making me crazy for nearly a year. From what I read of Hanau silver their reproductions could be very accurate. It's amazing to me that I could have an exact duplicate of a tankard made in 1571.
