Silver spoons Weilandt

Postby Hose_dk » Wed Feb 21, 2007 5:38 pm

I have these 2 spoons with the mark 12 and WEILANDT.
The zig zag line is 4,6cm I think that is a long line for a sample.

Can anyone confirm whether they are German? and give me an idea of how old they might be? And do you know Weilandt?

Thank very much in advance.

Yes, it's likely German or Polish. It's very difficult to attibute a mark with just a name and fineness (12 = 12 Lot = .750 silver). The zig-zag is indeed a test scratch, which means that the piece was assayed, but since there is no city mark that means that it was assayed in a small provincial town, after the dissolution of the guilds (the 1860s), or both.

All that bieng said, my guess is that it is by Weilandt, Sr. (fl. ca. 1850/1880) - his Christian name is not known - working in the Polish town of Kwidzyn (then the Prussian town of Marienwerder).

Hello, there are Weilandt's scattered all over Germany. Without an additional mark You have no chance of getting closer to this maker/retailer. Or of finding out whether he was German, Austrian or whatever. Best wishes, Bahner

Thank you for the responce. I know that it is difficult without the city - I just hoped that someone could help.
So thanks again.

The discussion on assayer's test marks that followed merited a thread of its own and has been moved ->
