Lovely Silver Kiddush Cup Engraved w/1837

Post by laura9797 »

Would love some help with this German Kiddush cup, Around the foot engraved in German "fur erinnerung an" translating to 'for memory of' and then many names including Kirchhoff, Muller, Grause, Dommes, Newburg. Heavy script - some is difficult to decipher. Also translated to December 25, 1837 and Stade (Lower Saxony). This piece measures approx. 8.25 in., weight 11.2 ounces.
Thank you for any help.

Hi,
The mark on the right is a key in an oval (Stade guild).
The cup does not meet the definition of Kiddush cup; there is nothing to indicate Jewish provenance.
More likely Christmas gift.
The maker was recorded by Clasen: Stader Silber, but I lost the book.

Hello, agree that this is not a Kiddush cup but a commemoration gift of some sort. Regards, Bahner

Thank so much for this help! It was very curious thinking it was Judaic since it was dated for Christmas! I really appreciate the help!

Hello, Hanukka (Chanukka) might be considered the Jewish equivalent of christmas. It is a moveble eight-day feast and may or may not include the date engraved on the cup. So no obvious connection here. Regards Bahner

Thank you very much for this information. Can you share with me the literature for the silversmith? I can not find any references to Schmahlfeldt or Schmalfeld.
