German (?) candlesticks

Well, I'm positively stumped by this one. I think these are German, as I can kind of make out the crown and crescent moon, but they're definitely open to interpretation. I've never seen the other marks on the item. Also, are these solid sterling, or are parts of them weighted? Seller says these are not weighted, but candlesticks usually are, so I'm a little wary. They weigh 674 grams and are 10.5'' tall.

Yes, I believe the candle sticks to be German and before 1886.


The town mark could be a crowned eagle above 13 (lot). The candle sticks are open and not filled or weighted.

Looks like 13 Loth standard (.813), i.e. before crescent and crown was introduced.
It is solid silver of lower standard than sterling, i.e. 81.3% vs 92.5% of pure silver in the alloy.
It is a false claim that most of candlestics are weighted; most of them are not.
Hopefully the marks will be recognized; I cannot decipher the marks.

Thank you! Is this item rare? I've never heard of the Loth standard before - I'm still relatively new to silver.

As for candlesticks being weighted, I've been mostly exposed to more recent (20th century) candlesticks made in the US, so that may explain it.

Great to learn something new!

Thank you, all! I was able to make a deal with the seller, so now I'm the proud new owner of these awesome candlesticks. I also reached out to Heritage Auctions just to get an appraisal. While they said they wouldn't be able to take it, because it's below their auction value cutoff, the appraisal did exceed what I paid for it by quite a bit. That said, I will definitely be keeping and displaying these.

Now I feel like I owe the forum a commission ;-)
