16th century? Nurnberg silver large spoon + FIW maker mark

Postby finderskeypurs » Sun Dec 10, 2006 2:01 am

This is a Nurnberg Germany sterling silver spoon, by all acounts very early plus the "rat tail" back of bowl, wondering if the N Nurnberg mark is 16th/17th century (is according to the Tardy Int'l Hallmarks on Silver book), and who the FIW in shield maker is. Photos below, thank you very much and amazing site all around!!!!

Nice spoon . I can only help with the zig zag design. That is a sample taken to test the silver. So it is taken randomly as a test.

Hello, this piece bears the maker's mark of Friedrich Jobst Wohlrab, apprentice since 1687, master since 1710, still mentioned in 1740. Beware of later reproductions - Nürnberg silver was highly valued. Best wishes, Bahner

Thank you, both of you, and I am really excited about this forum, I spend a lot of time on pieces but sometimes I just can't get them ID'd.
Thank you again,
Tom

This is an undamaged one I have, too. I think it's about the best thing I've ever found.
