B. Neresheimer & Sohne, Hanau

Post by AG2012 »

Hanau pseudo marks on the set of six identical stirrup cups made by Neresheimer, Hanau.
Various importers within more than 20 years span; hardly to assume someone managed to accummulate the set from different sources (French swan import mark in image 4 and items location in France), more likely acquired directly from Neesheimer stock.(An assumption, though).

According to legislation (December 19, 1809), all silverware had to be delivered to the recent installed redemption offices. Only if tax on silver items could be paid for by the owner in hard currency (i.e. silver coins) silver was exempted from this regulation. In such cases the object was marked with the monogram "FR". As only few owners of large silver items could afford to pay such a tax, a large number of silver objects of historic and artistic value were melted down.
The freistempel was used in 1809/10 for objects exempted to be delivered to the redempion offices.
