Soup Tureen (Possibly 12 Loth)

Postby TC82 » Fri May 07, 2021 12:53 am

I recently purchased the soup tureen in the attached images. The mark on the bottom reads "BUCKMANN" and is accompanied by the number "12". I was not able to find any information online regarding a German silversmith with the surname Buckmann. I'd appreciate any info if possible on the maker, origin, and the style/age of the piece. Also, are the marks typical of 12 loth silver?

Hello, this is Hermann Bückmann (Bueckmann) from Hannover, jeweller, goldsmith and silversmith. He became a master and a citizen there in 1841. Date of death unknown. The absence of a city marks leads me to believe that this can be dated around 1860/1870, give or take. Agree that 12 most likely stands for 12 Lot. The shop existed under this name well into the 20th century, but since ca. 1904 owned by a B. Person (sic). Regards, Bahner
