Laurel wreath German state/city mark mystery

Post by ilovespooning »

Hi there. We have two mystery marks on a large tablespoon. The first is a laurel wreath and the second is less clear (possibly a shield). Was found with fork with same monogram (RR) and pattern with “13” loth standard indicated. Any help would be appreciated as we have not been able to make progress in identifying the two marks. Thanks!

Thanks Theoderich for your interest. We wonder if it is a stemmed flower on the shield. We also wondered if the laurel wreath was a French mark but then why would it be paired with a loth fork.

Here are pictures of the fork:

Thanks Jörg this is really helpful. This leads me to believe the spoons could be Swiss as well. I did find a Swiss shield with flowers for the city of Rapperswil but much older. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Aleks that is really interesting!! We have been looking into French marks since your post, and I also see that Montpellier used the wreath as a hallmark which may look slightly closer to the mark on the spoon than the Paris mark. However, I wasn’t able to find as much detail as you did with your resources. Would you mind checking Montpellier and the wreath mark in your resources??
