German/central european (?) silver and bone ladle

Postby dinio » Sat Nov 04, 2006 4:43 pm

Hello,

I recently acquired at an auction a small ladle (10' and 4 oz) made in silver and bone. It appealed me because of its style which is simple and looks rather old, and also because of the bone handle which is not so common on a ladle.

Here is the ladle:

and here is the bone handle mounting:

I thought I would be able to identify the hallmarks but I was unable to find something consistent in my documentation which is not so huge for germany and central european countries. Also I did not find the solution in the web pages of this site.

Here are the hallmarks :

Obviously the '13' hallmark refers to Germany or Austria or other central european country, but I did not find the city mark in these countries. The closest marks I found are those from Strasburg when it was German, but the crown above the shield puzzles me. Baden-Baden has a similar shield-based hallmark but without a crown as well. Whereas Karlsruhe has a crown on top of the shield but the diagonal stripe is not the same.
Could somebody help in this city mark identification ?

The maker's mark is rubbed on its left side, but it seems to be composed of 4 letters :
- the first looks like a F or a P
- the second is very faint, quite illegible, but could be an S or an E
- the third and fourth are W and D

Any help for this ladle identification will be greatly appreciated.

This forum is really fantastic ! Thanks to all those people with such a huge knowledge who share it without reluctance !

The city mark is that of Karlsruhe, Germany and the maker's mark is almost certainly "F&WD" for brothers Friedrich & Wilhelm Deimling, working there in the first half of the 19th century.

Hope this helps!

Many thanks Blakstone!

I had Karlsruhe in my list of candidate cities but I did not have the pattern for this period, which explains why I was not sure.

Could you recommend a good reference (in english preferably!) for the german city marks and also the makers marks ? In the 'BOOKS' section of this site I did not identify german specific books - I already have the international references (Wyler's, Tardy's).

Thanks again for your help.
