Help! European 18th c. silver tongs with unidentified marks

Postby arakhajian » Wed Jun 15, 2016 3:56 pm

Greetings silver enthusiasts. I was curious if anyone out there might recognize these marks, which I believe could be Dutch, on a pair of 18th c. tongs. One of the marks looks like a cat or fox walking up a ramp or ladder of some sort, and the other mark looks like the letter 'S'. The reason why I thought they might be of Dutch origin is because there's an inscription inside the tongs that reads 'Gerdt Petersen WWC 1815' and I thought that it sounded like a Dutch name. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, welcome to the forum. Not Dutch but could be Nordic or perhaps colonial.

Best,

Oel.

Hi,
It`s German, Otterndorf (Hanover), Lower Saxony
Town coat of arms is here and exactly the same mark in Rosenberg # 4365 for 18th century silver
And of course it is an otter.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otterndorf
I will save and extract the mark from Rosenberg for you (it takes time).
Best wishes

Hello,
early 19th century, made by Johann Carl Schauer (1770-1840) from Otterndorf.

Regards,
Ringo
