Silver Box of Unknown Origin - is it French?

Post by sjp2548 »

I'm told that this box is French but I can't loacate any of the marks on this site (or anywhere else). Can anyone help me to identify these marks. Are they French. Also I'd love to know the approximate date.

Thanks for your help

Your piece is actually German, from around 1900. The marks are pesudo-marks, which were widely used by makers of "antique" style silver in Hanau, Germany. (Our forum moderator has provided a very informative link about Hanau historical silver on this thread.)

These particular marks are those of Georg Roth, who coincidentally has a piece in another thread today. The marks you show are probably the most common on Roth's pieces, and again we see his company's distinctive medallion and garland style.

Hope this helps!
