Help needed with Hallmarks on French Snuff Box

Postby silverquery » Thu May 25, 2006 11:17 am

I have been unable to identify the Hallmarks on this heart-shaped snuff box. There are several similar French marks listed in Jan Divis but none that match exactly. The portraits appear to be King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Any help regarding the age, silver purity, and maker would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Your box is silver, most likely lower fineness than sterling. It was made in Hanau, Germany in the late 19th-early 20th century. The marks are fantasy or pseudo-marks, used to insinuate that the piece is much older. Believe the maker is Georg Roth & Co.
