Dutch 935 silver compote initials "RG" in shield, pre-1814

Postby dkg41165 » Wed Aug 20, 2014 9:16 pm

Hello. I would like to know more about who the maker is of this compote that I own, with initials "RG" in a shield. It would be before 1814 I believe. Many many thanks for your expertise if you can help with this. David, Durham, NC, USA

I was able to figure out that it is Dutch, but I am still unsure how early. I think it bears the Rotterdam city mark and the Province of Holland standard silver mark of 935/1000. The hallmark that has me confused is the A with the O above it. This mark does not line up with any of the date-marks that I can find online, which go all the way back to 1814. So is this urn even earlier than that? I was also unable to identify the maker whose initials “RG” are hallmarked within a crown. Do you know anything about this Early .935 Dutch Silver Urn?

Looks German and newer. Hanau... with pseudo marks, maybe look at George Roth

AGHEAD, Thanks for the info. But, in looking up George Roth (Hanau, Germany), the mark doesn't seem to fit. For example, the mark on my piece is "RG", not "GR", and although I'm new to silver collecting, I'll assume it's Dutch until I find out more. Hoping someone can confirm that it is Dutch (or where it was made if not Dutch) and approximate age and even the maker, "RG".

Best, David

Hi David welcome to the forum.
Your image enhanced and embedded;
Image
Not Dutch and definitely Hanau see; Schleisner & Sohne for the RG in shield; [s475*] and Storck & Sinsheimer marks; 3&4 “pellet top A” almost identical to Schleisner [s476] Also the numeral fineness 930 in combination with the marks indicates Hanau and /or pseudo marks.

For Dutch marks see:
