Hello guys,
I need help with this solid silver basket.
I believe i found the mark but i'm not sure.
1.Is it from Augsburg? The letter F according to what i found refers to 1743-1745.
2.Can not identify the makers mark.. IBS? LBS?
Does anyone know what is this scene in the middle of it?
A-N-Y info would be appreciated!! thanks

Your basket is too late in style to be 1745. Your photo of the date mark is not quite clear, but I am sure it is 1791-3. The maker is Johann Balthasar STENGLIN. Who is described as a silver smith and filigree worker, which obviously matches your basket. He became a master in 1765 and died in 1826. The subject matter is a boy riding a dolphin, and a naked lady, so I would think it has something to do with Venus.

Dear Smadgos

The scene in the middle shows the Greek god of physical love, Eros, and Aphrodite. They are translated into the Roman mythology as Amor (or Cupid) and Venus.
See Wikipedia for more information to Eros:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eros

and here a 1st century BC piece of art featuring Eros on a dolphin.

There is no special story for featuring Eros on a dolphin, it is just a common depiction of the subject.

Kind regards

Jörg

Thank you Jörg and Maurice!
Maurice, Here is a clearer larger photo of the marks.
I tried searching for 1791-1793 mark that looks like mine but couldn't find a match.
I did find this page that shows that the "F" with the pine cone above is related to 1743-1745 : (admin edit removed link to avoid confusion)
Could you please tell where did you find this info? i'm kind of lost here..

I found the marks in Seling, but the date mark is also in Rosenberg. The best source for you is Theo Hecker's site.

Unfortunately that date mark is missing, but you can see the similarity to the ones before and after. You might also give Theo permission here to use your marks.

I think your translator made a mistake, something was missing, but your site is neither little nor does it make mistakes very often.
Personally I wish your site was available 30 years ago. I would have saved a lot of money on books, and been able to access the information on the web when I was not at home. I also would have made a lot more money.
We all owe ein großes Dankeschön.
