unidentified kettle

Postby EmmaW » Mon Jul 22, 2013 9:28 am

Hi

Firstly thank you so much for such a great website. I am new to the world of silver and find it invaluable. My boss has given me a kettle to find out about. She thinks it might be Dutch but so far I've had no luck and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you

Emma

Ps. Sorry about the massive pictures. It was hard enough to figure out how to get them up here. Will try for smaller next time

Hi Emma,

Welcome to the forum. Yes, Dutch and I believe it to be the made in the city of Delft, date letter crowned B(small printed character) could be for the year 1707 or for the years; 1755-1779
Maker’s mark H (mal-formed,twice perhaps) perhaps for; Jan Havershoeck 1681-….. or Jan v.d. Horst II 1746-1782
Many assumptions and this moment I have no example of the maker’s mark used by Jan Havershoeck or Jan v.d. Horst II.

Dear Oel

Thanks for the response. I've had someone else say it is of Dutch style but actually German and from Wesel. What do you think? And please will you tell me which marks made you think it was from Delft.

Thanks for everything

Emma

Wesel city mark, I suppose should look like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesel

Delft city mark;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delft

The city mark on silver objects made in the city of Delft is based on the city arms: a vertical beam in a standing (crowned) oval shaped coat of arms, of which the beam is provided with horizontal lines ( actually more v shaped like chevron). On the moment I have no excess to my library and we could be looking at pseudo marks, perhaps next week I could tell you a little more.

Hi Emma,

No problem with a little imagination I can see a 13 lot mark but…. I have moved you to the German section, so our German contributors can have a go on it.

Hi Emma,

After some more digging, I can confirm your miniature kettle is definitely not made in Holland and does not carry any hallmarks to indicate the city of Delft or other Dutch city.

Best,

Oel.

Thanks Oel and Theo for all your help.

I've managed to get an answer from an expert in London and thought I'd share it for anyone who's interested. As Theo said it was made in Wesel in 1743-4. The crowned mark at the top is the warden's mark, the bottom is the town mark that replaced the older weasel's mark and the crowned B is the date letter. The maker's mark was impossible for him to make out but could possibly be for Jacobus van der Lucht.

Emma
