Beaker made from a Thaler

Postby Granmaa » Tue May 08, 2012 12:54 pm

This is a little beaker made from a thaler (silver coin). It says as much on the bottom along with what I presume to be a silversmith's name, because of the anvil and hammers design. It's difficult to read, but I think it's Geltiben or Geteiben.

I think if anyone knows the silversmith, then where he works will be quite likely to be the city embossed on the beaker itself.

Dear Miles,
there is no silversmith name

GETRIBEN (getrieben = maked or driven out of a Thaler)

Thank you, Theoderich.

What a pity. Have you seen this stamp before?

I am surprices that they bothered to make this mark. When makin a stamp - we should suspect it to be used again and again.
Normally when a coin is used - you dont set marks (punch laddles from UK) (or when used as raw materials)

Could we assume that this Thaler mark is used very late in time??? ie around 1880-1900??

It's possible that the city is that of Augsburg where I believe they made these coins.
The buildings are quite similar.

Dear Miles

I think it is a view from Munich, the Theatinerkirche. Check here a picture from Wikipedia:
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... 0322193538"
In English: Theatine Church

I am quite certain. In front of the curch is the city wall visible. Munich started to tear down its fortification soon after the year 1800. I think the view represents the status of the 18th century. I do not think your beaker is made after 1800.
It must be a kind of a souvenir. It is made rather crude, and they point out it is made from a Thaler. This could serve two purposes: First, it indicates the minimum material value and is a couriosity, motivates "tourists", maybe pilgrims to the Theatine Church, to buy it.
If it is made of a Thaler of the 18th century it should weight around 28 grams.

Kind regards

Jörg

Digging a bit deeper in the history of the church I read in the German Wikipedia that after 1765 the current existing rococo facade was added to the church. The picture on the beaker shows the church without this facade. I conclude it resembles the situation before 1765.

Regards

Jörg
