Town and Maker?

Postby joho » Sat Oct 08, 2011 12:21 pm

Hi - can anyone help identify the marks on this silver snuff box? The town mark is partially struck, but I think is a unicorn. The makers mark is stamped I A , but is not in a shield. It looks 18th or 19th century to me. Many thanks John

a possible maker is the Schwäbisch Gmünd master Johannes Ade (1748-83) (ref.R³ no.2198)
an other posibility is the town Giengen

Many thanks Theoderich - much appreciated. Schwäbisch Gmünd looks likely, although the shape of the punch is different. I guess the punch shape changed from time to time. Also, your example shows a makers mark where the makers initials appear to be individually stamped as in my box. John

Yes, it seems to be a typical box from Schwäbisch Gmünd ! Thanks for all your efforts Theo. Kind regards John
