Unknown City and Maker mark on a pre-1800 fork

Postby Joerg » Sat May 21, 2011 4:15 pm

Please help me identify the city mark and the maker of this fork. From the style, the marks and the appearance I think it is from between 1750 and 1800.
I got it from a flea market in Aarau, Switzerland. Aarau has an eagle in its city coat, but it looks different and in my reference books silver from Aarau always has the letter A as city mark, not an eagle.

Thank you

Jörg

Swiss, yes, but not Aarau: it's from Neuchâtel. The maker "C.G/B" is Charles-Louis-Guillaume Bonvêpre (1749-1808), master 1766.

Nice find - I'm very fond of Swiss silver!

Ref: François-Pierre de Vevey, Manuel Des Orfèvres De Suisse Romande (Fribourg: Sotheby's/Office du Livre, 1985), p. 186, maker no. 1252a.

Thank you, Blackstone, your knowledge on the subject is extraordinary. I only had small hope for solving this mistery.
Also your quotation of your reference is very helpful.

Kind regards

Jörg
